Impresi film Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps yang saya tonton ulang beberapa malam yang lalu masih membekas di benak saya. Bagi yang udah pernah nonton, pastinya sependapat. Film yang berkisah tentang geliat kehidupan para pialang di Wall Street ini merupakan sekuel dari film berjudul sama tahun 1987. Agak sedikit lain dengan ulasan-ulasan tentang film ini di blog-blog lain, pada postingan kali ini saya tertarik untuk membicarakan konsep energi alternatif yang juga diangkat sebagai salah satu background story disini.
Saat kedatangan investor dari China, Churchill Schwartz, investment bank tempat Jacob Moore (Shia LaBeouf) bekerja kewalahan dan hampir kehilangan investor potensial, karena ternyata proposal investasi energi yang mereka tawarkan ditolak oleh pengusaha China tersebut. Jacob Moore pun bertindak cepat. Walaupun terkesan lancang & tidak meminta pendapat rekan-rekan setimnya, dia segera menawarkan proposal energi alternatif yang ia tekuni belakangan ini kepada investor China tersebut:
What about fusion? We happen to be working with a company right now. It’s got all the hardware in place. Started by the Department of Energy. They share R&D facilities with the University of California. It’s got a market cap right now of about a billion. No earnings.
The simple of it is, it’s using the intense energy of some 200 laser beams focused on a single target the size of a few grains of rice, filled with hydrogen fuel. So the idea being that when that target combusts, it produces more energy than it took in. All the tests they’ve done indicate that they can use this ignition process to turn simple seawater into energy. It’s called Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion. Using the reaction between hot water on the surface and cold water beneath to power the lasers. So what you wind up with is unlimited clean energy.
